WHICH NATIONALITIES NEED TO APPLY FOR ETIAS?

There are more than 50 visa-exempt countries whose citizens can apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation.

ETIAS will be fully operational from 2026 .

WHICH COUNTRIES DO I NEED ETIAS FOR?

You will need to make an ETIAS application to visit any country in the Schengen Area, or in the process of joining.

The list of ETIAS countries includes:

  • All EU countries except Ireland
  • All EFTA members: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland
  • Microstates that are only accessible via EU countries: Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City

ETIAS will also be valid to travel to Cyprus, even if it is not yet a part of Schengen.

NATIONALITIES WHO NEED TO APPLY FOR ETIAS:

Citizens of all visa-exempt countries outside of the European Union will need the ETIAS to make before their trip to the Schengen Area.

Travellers from these countries must register with ETIAS to cross an external Schengen border. There are no checks at internal borders.

Citizens of the following countries need to apply for ETIAS to travel to Europe.

ETIAS FOR BRITISH CITIZENS

Following Brexit and the UK’s departure from the European Union, British passport holders are now third-country nationals.

While they will not be required to obtain a visa for short stays in Europe, British tourists will need ETIAS to visit Europe.

With this change to entry requirements approaching, British citizens show great interest in ETIAS. 14% of all enquires received by ETIASVisa.com in 2024 were from UK passport holders.

ETIAS FOR CITIZENS OF THE AMERICAS

CItizens of countries of North and South American counties need ETIAS to travel to Europe.

Travellers from the US have shown the greatest interest in the new travel authorisation according to data gathered by etiasvisa.com. European countries such as France, Italy, and Spain are top travel destinations for US citizens.

Passport holders from most Latin American countries are eligible for visa-free entry to Europe. This is also reflected in the number of ETIAS enquiries received. Of the 10 most ETIAS-aware countries, 7 are in Latin America.

WHO IS EXEMPT FROM ETIAS?

Only travellers from EU and EFTA countries are exempt from ETIAS. They can continue to enjoy free movement within the Schengen Area.

Citizens of non-EU countries that are visa-exempt will need an ETIAS.

Other nationalities continue to need a Schengen visa. They are not eligible for the ETIAS.

DO I NEED A VISA FOR SHORT STAYS IN EUROPE?

Visa-exempt citizens travelling to any country in the Schengen Area for tourism, business or short-term study will need ETIAS. ETIAS is a visa waiver, not a visa.

The authorisation will also be required to transit through Schengen territory en route to a third country.

With ETIAS, overseas visitors can stay in the region for up to 90 days in a 180-day period without a visa.

A visa or other permit is needed to stay in the Schengen Area for longer than 3 months, or for purposes other than those mentioned above.

DO CHILDREN FROM NON-EU COUNTRIES NEED ETIAS?

Yes, passport holders under the age of 18 will need to register with ETIAS.

Parents and guardians can apply for ETIAS for their children, indicating on the form that the request is being made on behalf of a minor.
