The European Travel Information and Authorisation System, referred to as ETIAS, is a visa waiver program established by the European Commission. This program has been designed to strengthen Europe’s border security. The EU announced that as of 2020 Colombians who wish to visit the countries in the Schengen Area for business or tourism will be expected to enroll with an ETIAS visa.
What should Colombians do before they travel to Europe?
Currently, Colombians are required to apply for a Schengen Visa if they wish to travel to countries in this European zone. This visa allows Colombians a stay of up to 90 days as well as the opportunity to travel throughout most of Europe.
In addition to applying for the Schengen visa, Colombians will be required to enroll with the ETIAS authorization.
The ETIAS authorization application process requires that applicants have the following requisites when they access the ETIAS online application:
- A Colombian passport, valid for more than 3 months beyond the intended stay.
- A valid Schengen Visa
- A current email address to receive the approved ETIAS authorization
- A debit card or credit card to pay for the ETIAS visa fee.
It is strongly advised that nationals of Colombia have a valid passport when they apply for the ETIAS. This document is also necessary when traveling in Europe.
Colombian Citizens ETIAS Application
As of 2020, applying for an ETIAS will be a legal requirement for all Colombians traveling to the Schengen zone. Nationals of Colombia will have to use an online registration system before leaving their country of residence.
Besides the requirements previously mentioned, each Colombian traveler must complete an online application for the European visa. The ETIAS requisites for Colombian nationals include a valid Colombian passport, Schengen visa, valid payment method and email address. In addition, all Colombians should complete the following data:
-Colombian passport details, including expiration date of the passport. If the passport nears expiration date, the traveller should renew the passport before enrolling with ETIAS. -Valid contact details, a physical address besides a current email in which the candidate should receive the ETIAS -Details about traveller’s health and travel information
The application for ETIAS for Colombians incorporates security questions such as travel plans. The online process is easy to do, as long as the information provided is sincere and accurate. Once approved, the European visa for Colombian citizens is sent via email.
Traveling from Colombia with an ETIAS
All Colombians traveling to Europe with an ETIAS have unlimited entries to the Schengen zone during the length of their stay.
As of 2020, the ETIAS will be an obligatory travel requirement for Colombian citizens traveling to Europe. The ETIAS is valid for a period of 5 years and all people over 18 years of age are required to complete the online application. Minors are not expected to enroll or pay the visa fee.
The EU ETIAS visa grants Colombian citizens the permission to visit any of the European countries that are part of the Schengen zone. All applications are screened by the EU Border Control who checks information against several security databases including Interpol and the ETIAS watchlist.
