As of 2021, the European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS, will come into effect. Lithuania is one of the 26 countries in Europe that will require travelers to have ETIAS authorization after this date.
Foreign citizens who travel to any country in the Schengen Area for business or leisure must apply for an ETIAS Travel Authorization once the system is in effect. A Lithuania ETIAS will also be valid for travel within the other countries in the system.
The principal reason for the introduction of the Europe travel permit ETIAS is to improve security within the borders of Europe as a whole. However, the online ETIAS application is designed to be a simple and efficient process, so you’ll have your European Visa Waiver before you know it.
Lithuania in Europe: Why Do I need a Visa Waiver?
Lithuania is a small country in North-East Europe and one of the Baltic States alongside Estonia and Latvia. Although the capital city Vilnius is the second largest city in the Baltic States after Riga in Latvia, the population of the entire country is just under 3 million.
Historically, Lithuania had a close connection with its neighbor Poland, as the two countries formed a Commonwealth in 1569 that lasted for two centuries. After its dissolution, Lithuania was absorbed into the Russian Empire, and it remained under Soviet control with the other Baltic States until Lithuanian independence was restored in 1990. In 1989, it was determined that the geographic center of Europe was actually within the borders of Lithuania.
Lithuania joined the European Union in May 2004, and adopted the euro currency in 2015. Internal European trade currently makes up 61% of Lithuania’s exports. It has been a member of the Schengen Area, which allows free travel between member countries since 2007. It also enjoys close proximity to fellow Schengen Area countries Finland, Sweden and Denmark across the Baltic Sea.
ETIAS Requirements for Lithuania
Foreign travelers who apply for a Europe travel authorization for Lithuania from 2021 onwards must obtain an online ETIAS travel permit. However, ETIAS authorization is valid across all the countries in the Schengen Area, allowing the holder access to any of the countries within the agreement. The electronic travel authorization ETIAS also lasts for up to 3 years and, like the US ESTA, allows for a maximum stay of 90 consecutive days within each country.
How to apply for an European Visa Waiver valid for Lithuania
Applicants must have a valid passport (a minimum of 3 months validity from date of arrival) from an ETIAS compatible country to get the Europe travel visa for Lithuania. However, the online application for ETIAS is fast and easy to use, with the entire application process taking around 10 minutes to complete.
Necessary information to complete the ETIAS permit for Lithuania includes the personal contact details of the applicant, details about their travel itinerary and their passport information. Some basic security questions about the health of the applicant and previous immigration issues are also required. Lastly, in order to receive the Lithuania Visa Waiver, applicants must also have a credit/debit card to pay the fee, as well as a valid current email address where the ETIAS will be sent.
The validity of a multiple-entry ETIAS lasts for 3 years unless the corresponding passport expires, in which case the ETIAS holder must re-apply for a Europe travel visa waiver for Lithuania.
