ETIAS for Brazilians

European travel authorisation for Brazilian Citizens

This website does not belong to, nor is it affiliated with, the EU. The official website of the European Union is europa.eu.

Travellers from Brazil can visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. The Schengen Area includes popular destinations for Brazilian tourists including Portugal and Spain.

Although Brazilians do not need a Schengen visa, they do need to apply online for an ETIAS travel authorisation. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System will be operational from 2026 .

ETIAS is not a visa. It is an electronic travel permit for short visa-free stays in Europe.

CHECK YOU’RE ELIGIBLE FOR ETIAS FOR BRAZILIANS

Brazilian passport holders are eligible for an ETIAS visa waiver if they:

  • Have a valid Brazilian passport with at least 3 months' validity beyond their intended stay in Europe.
  • Plan to visit the Schengen Area for tourism, business, or short-term study
  • Intend to stay for no more than 90 days within a 180-day period.

If you meet these requirements, you can apply for ETIAS and travel to Europe visa-free.

ETIAS APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR BRAZILIAN TRAVELLERS

Here is how to apply for ETIAS with your Brazilian passport, step-by-step:

  • Complete the online application form
  • Provide a valid email address for communication
  • Pay the application fee using a credit or debit card
  • Submit the application and wait for the approval email

ETIAS processing is fast, the travel authorisation is linked to the Brazilian passport on approval.

WHAT INFORMATION DO BRAZILIANS NEED TO PROVIDE ON THE ETIAS FORM?

Brazilians need to complete all parts of the ETIAS form accurately. Required information includes:

  • Full name, date and place of birth
  • Passport details, like the passport number, issue and expiry date
  • First country of entry in Europe
  • Educational level and occupation
  • Criminal record details, travel to conflict areas

In most cases, you won’t need to provide additional documentation or attend an interview.

Fewer than 0.1% of applicants will be invited to interview according to the ETIAS regulation, and only in exceptional circumstances. Failure to provide documentation or attend an interview will result in the denial of the ETIAS visa waiver.

CAN I SUBMIT A GROUP ETIAS APPLICATION FROM BRAZIL?

You cannot submit a group or family ETIAS application. Each Brazilian passport holder needs to complete their own, individual application.

DOES IT MATTER IF I DO NOT HAVE CONFIRMED TRAVEL PLANS?

It does not matter if you do not have confirmed travel plans. You can use your approved ETIAS to travel to Europe at any point during its validity period.

You must indicate which Schengen country you intend to enter first when completing your form. However, once ETIAS is approved, you can enter any of the Schengen countries—it does not have to be the one you included in your application.

ETIAS FOR BRAZILIANS: VALIDITY AND WHEN TO RENEW

ETIAS visa waiver has a validity of 3 years or until the passport used to apply expires, whichever comes first. During this validity period, Brazilian passport holders can enter the Schengen Area multiple times, with each stay limited to 90 days within a 180-day period.

This allows for flexibility in planning multiple short trips to Europe, whether for tourism, business, or family visits. For example, Brazilians can visit Europe for a 30-day holiday, exit the Schengen Area and then return for up to 60 more days in that 180-day period without reapplying for ETIAS.

When ETIAS is about to expire or your passport reaches its expiration date, you must renew your authorization. You can do this by repeating the original online application process.

TRAVELLING TO EUROPE WITH ETIAS FROM BRAZIL

Brazilians can use the ETIAS visa waiver to travel to Europe for tourism, business, and short-term study.

  1. Tourism: With ETIAS, Brazilians can visit popular tourist destinations like France, Italy, or Spain.
  2. Business: Brazilians who wish to attend a conference or meet with clients can use ETIAS to visit important business hubs like Germany or the Netherlands.
  3. Short-term study: Brazilian nationals can take a short course or attend a workshop in countries across the Schengen Area.

ETIAS can be used for any of these activities each time you travel. As a Brazilian, you must get a visa for Europe to work or stay long-term.

ETIAS does not guarantee entry to Europe. The visa waiver is verified at the external Schengen border and officials will ensure visitors meet the entry conditions.

BRAZILIANS MUST TRAVEL WITH THE PASSPORT USED TO APPLY FOR ETIAS

You must travel with the Brazilian passport you used to apply for ETIAS. ETIAS is linked to a specific passport and will not be recognised if you present a different document when crossing the border.

If you replace or renews your Brazilian passport, you must reapply for ETIAS with their new passport.

ETIAS FROM BRAZIL SECURITY PROCEDURES

ETIAS uses international security databases to screen travellers before they enter the Schengen Area, including several managed by eu-LISA. This process enhances the safety of visitors in European countries by identifying potential security risks and helping prevent unauthorized entry.

DATABASES CONSULTED DURING ETIAS SCREENING

ETIAS consults several international security databases during the screening process, including:

  1. SIS (Schengen Information System): This database contains information on individuals and objects of interest to law enforcement agencies in the Schengen Area.
  2. VIS (Visa Information System): This database contains data on visa applications and decisions for travellers visiting the Schengen Area. EUROPOL Data: This database contains information on known criminals, terrorists, and other persons of interest to European law enforcement agencies.
  3. INTERPOL Databases: These databases contain information on wanted persons, stolen and lost travel documents, and other data relevant to international law enforcement cooperation.
  4. ETIAS watchlist: a list of people who have committed or are considered likely to commit serious crime in Europe.

THE BENEFITS OF ETIAS SCREENING FOR BRAZILIAN TRAVELLERS

The ETIAS screening procedure enhances the safety of Brazilian visitors to European countries by:

  1. Identifying potential security risks before they enter the Schengen Area, allowing authorities to take appropriate measures to prevent unauthorized entry.
  2. Detecting and preventing cases of visa fraud, ensuring that only genuine travellers are granted access to the Schengen Area.
  3. Streamlining border control procedures, as travellers with an approved ETIAS authorization have already been pre-screened against international security databases, resulting in faster and more efficient border checks.

ETIAS plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and security of travellers and residents within the Schengen Area.
