Citizens from Taiwan travelling to Europe will be able to apply for ETIAS from 2026 . The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is being implemented by the European Union to improve the security of the region.

Nationals from more than 50 countries can travel to the Schengen Area without a visa. Citizens of these countries need the travel authorisation to visit the region visa-free. The new visa waiver will improve border management and security.

ETIAS will allow holders to travel to any country in the Schengen Area. There are 22 European Union member states, which include Italy, Spain, France, and Poland. There are also 4-non EU countries that are part of the Schengen Agreement: Norway, iceland, Switzerland, and Lichtenstein.

WHAT DO TAIWANESE PEOPLE NEED TO VISIT EUROPE?

Taiwanese nationals do not need a visa to visit Europe short-term. They can travel to the Schengen Area for up to 90 days per 180-day period without applying for a visa. This will not change with the introduction of ETIAS, ETIAS is a visa waiver, not a visa. Taiwanese nationals will still be able to visit Europe short-term without a visa, but they will need to register with ETIAS.

The ETIAS requirements for Taiwanese citizens are simple. A Taiwanese passport, an email address and a valid credit or debit card are required.

Taiwanese citizens will need to meet these ETIAS visa waiver requirements to travel to European Schengen zone countries without a visa. Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania are in the process of joining the Schengen Area and ETIAS will be required.

The applicant’s passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area. ETIAS will be electronically linked to the traveller’s passport. It is important that a traveller uses the same passport on the ETIAS application and to travel to Europe.

Once they have completed the online ETIAS application form, all travellers from Taiwan will need to pay the ETIAS visa waiver fee using a credit or debit card via the online payment system.

TRAVELLING TO EUROPE WITH ETIAS FOR TAIWANESE CITIZENS

ETIAS will allow Taiwanese citizens to travel to the European Schengen Area visa-free. It is a multiple-entry permit, meaning Taiwanese citizens with a confirmed ETIAS can travel to Europe multiple times for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The ETIAS visa waiver is valid for a total of 3 consecutive years or until the traveller’s passport expires. Once either the passport or the visa waiver expires, Taiwanese citizens will need to apply for an ETIAS renewal and complete the application, pay the ETIAS fee and await their confirmed ETIAS visa waiver before traveling to Europe again.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN ETIAS FOR TAIWANESE CITIZENS

Tourists from Taiwan who will have to apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation by completing an online application form. Each applicant must provide the following details to get their ETIAS:

  • Basic personal information including name, surname, date and place of birth etc.
  • Passport details such as passport number, expiration date and country of issue etc.

Before submitting the application, it is also necessary to answer a series of security questions.

Taiwanese applicants should check their ETIAS application before submitting the request. The information provided has to match the passport and security questions must be answered honestly.

ETIAS SECURITY CHECKS ON TRAVELLERS FROM TAIWAN

The ETIAS system will pre-screen travellers before they go to Europe. Information introduced by each traveller will be checked against various international and European security databases such as the ETIAS Watchlist, Interpol and Europol.

eu-LISA, the European Agency for the Operational Management of Large-scale IT Systems, is developing ETIAS. The agency was established in 2011, and manages large-scale integrated IT systems that:

  • Maintain internal security in the Schengen countries
  • Enable Schengen countries to exchange visa data
  • Determine which EU country is responsible for examining an asylum application

Systems that currently contribute to Europe’s security include the Visa Information System (VIS), EURODAC, and the second generation Schengen Information System (SIS II). Schengen countries already exchange information about foreign visitors. The ETIAS system will be no different, as it is being designed to cross-check applicant’s data.

Taiwanese citizens are non-EU nationals who do not need a visa to travel to the Schengen zone. ETIAS is being designed to pre-screen the applicant’s data. As an automated system, processing will be fast. However, it is still advisable to apply for ETIAS as soon as possible before travelling. Applicants should make sure the data they enter is accurate and matches the details on their passport.

How Many Times Can Taiwanese Citizens Travel with ETIAS? Toggle faqs

ETIAS will be valid for multiple trips over the course of 3 years from the day the travel authorisation is issued. The passport, however, must be valid during these 3 years. If the passport expires, the traveller will need to apply for a new ETIAS visa waiver.

An ETIAS travel authorisation cannot be extended. Once it has expired, the traveller will need to submit a new application. ETIAS is linked electronically to the traveller’s biometric passport. This is why it is essential that both ETIAS and the passport are valid when travelling to Europe.
