ETIAS for Marshallese Citizens

Europe Visa Waiver Requirements for Marshallese Citizens

Travelers with passports from the Republic of the Marshall Islands can enter the European Union until late 2022 just by presenting their valid passport at the border upon arrival.

This is possible thanks to the visa waiver agreement between the Marshall Islands and Europe.

Nevertheless, all citizens from countries with visa waiver agreements with Europe will be required to register online for a travel authorization prior to their departure from late 2022, onwards.

The travel authorization for Europe is known as the ETIAS, which stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. The electronic document will be a mandatory entry requirement for all 26 Schengen member states and must be carried by all travelers —including Marshallese passport holders.

Citizens visiting Europe from the Marshall Islands for business, leisure, tourism, health or transit purposes for up to 90 days must carry an approved ETIAS visa waiver as well as their valid, biometric passport.

ETIAS Required Documents for Citizens of the Marshall Islands

Since the ETIAS is not a traditional visa, the application process:

  • Can be completed entirely online
  • Does not require visiting an embassy or consulate
  • Does not involve waiting in long lines

Is approved —in most cases— within 24 hours on business days, although some requests may take longer (up to 2-3 business days)

Additionally, the documents required to obtain an ETIAS from the Marshall Islands are really simple:

  • A valid biometric, machine-readable Marshallese passport with an expiry date that is at least 3 months beyond the intended stay in Europe
  • An email address the applicant has access to —the ETIAS will be sent to this address in digital format
  • A credit or debit card —to pay for the ETIAS issuance fees

Applying for an ETIAS online Authorization from the Marshall Islands

Obtaining an ETIAS travel authorization for Europe from the Marshall Islands will be simple and straightforward, and should take users no longer than 10 minutes to request.

As soon as the online application for ETIAS opens to the public, Marshallese passport holders —who have the required documents mentioned above at hand— will be able to fill out the form with the following information:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Country of birth
  • Nationality on passport
  • Passport number
  • Date of issuance of passport
  • Passport expiration date
  • Estimated arrival date
  • First country of arrival to the Schengen Area
  • Travel purpose

Important Notice: It is advisable to carefully verify that all the data entered in the ETIAS application form for Marshallese citizens coincides exactly with the data printed on the citizen’s passport. Any errors or discrepancies in the data could cause delays in the ETIAS processing times, or even result in the refusal of the travel authorization.

Marshallese nationals will then have to answer some simple questions in regards to security and health, as well as provide their contact information.

Health and security questions are required in order to ensure that the traveler does not pose a risk to the health, security and wellbeing of European Union residents.

Contact information includes a cell phone number as well as an email address, both of which are necessary in order to receive notifications on the progress of the ETIAS application from the Marshall Islands.

Once approved, the ETIAS travel authorization will be sent to the Marshallese citizen, in PDF format, to the email address provided in the application form.

Traveling to Europe from the Marshall Islands with an ETIAS

Once the ETIAS travel authorization system is fully operational in late 2022, border security checks should be quicker for Marshallese citizens and other travelers.

All airline and cruise line carriers will be required to ensure that eligible travelers carry a valid ETIAS in order to board a vehicle en route to the Schengen Area.

The ETIAS will not only grant Marshallese holders permission to enter all of the Schengen nations but also free circulation between them for up to 90 days per 180-day period.

This means that travelers from the Marshall Islands can spend a total of 90 days within the Schengen borders. Once the 90 days permitted are over, the citizen must spend the following 90 days outside the Schengen Area in order to be granted another 90-day stay that they may spend within the member nations.

Every entry and exit in the Schengen Area will be recorded in the Entry/Exit System (EES) that is being implemented alongside the ETIAS travel authorization. It is very important for Marshallese ETIAS holders to ensure they do not exceed the allotted 90 days within the Schengen Area.

Marshallese citizens overstaying their ETIAS may face fines, deportation, the revocation of their travel authorization as well as being registered in the EES, which may hinder their chances of obtaining another ETIAS in the future.

The ETIAS travel authorization for Europe is a multiple entry permit that will allow Marshallese citizens to enter member nations an unlimited number of times so long as they do not exceed the allotted stay.

Once approved, the ETIAS for Marshallese nationals will be valid for 3 consecutive years or until the passport used in the application form expires, whichever happens first.

ETIAS Security For Marshallese Passport Holders

The ETIAS is being set in place by the European Union in order to improve security within the Schengen borders. This will ultimately benefit both residents and visitors —including those from the Marshall Islands.

When a Marshallese passport holder introduces their information in the ETIAS application form, their data will be screened across multiple security databases such as:

  • Interpol
  • SIS
  • VIS
  • Europol
  • EURODAC

All questions in the ETIAS application form must be answered honestly. Applicants with a criminal record may still have a chance of being granted an ETIAS for Marshallese nationals as long as European authorities consider the individual does not pose a risk for the EU.

ETIAS for Marshallese citizens - FAQ

  • ETIAS for Marshallese citizens with dual nationality

Once the ETIAS is approved, it will remain electronically linked with the exact passport used in the application process. The ETIAS travel authorization for Marshallese nationals cannot be transferred from one passport to another, not even when both belong to the same citizen.

Therefore, Marshallese passport holders with more than one valid passport due to dual citizenship must:

    • Choose one passport to travel on —make sure it is eligible for an ETIAS and has at least 3 months’ remaining validity beyond the travel dates
    • Use the same passport to apply for the ETIAS travel authorization Make sure to carry the passport with the approved ETIAS while traveling through Europe.

  • What happens if my Marshallese passport expires while my ETIAS for Europe is still valid?

The ETIAS travel authorization is valid for 3 years as long as the Marshallese passport used during the application process remains current.

An approved ETIAS cannot be transferred to a new passport. Therefore, when the Marshallese passport expires during the 3 years’ validity of the ETIAS, the travel authorization will be rendered null.

A Marshallese citizen whose passport expires while their ETIAS is still within 3 years of having been issued will need to request a new ETIAS travel authorization using the details of their new passport.

This can be done by filling out the ETIAS application form for Marshallese citizens with the passport number, issuance date and country and expiration date of the newly-issued passport.

  • Can citizens of the Marshall Islands work in Europe on an ETIAS?

The ETIAS for Marshallese passport holders allows travelers to visit all Schengen member states for business purposes for up to 90 days per 180-day period.

Additionally, the ETIAS is an invaluable resource for individuals who wish to work in Europe but are not yet clear on which country to reside in. Marshallese ETIAS holders can visit multiple cities in different Schengen countries until they find the one that best suits their needs and preferences.

Once the citizen has chosen a country to work and reside in, they will need to apply for a work visa at an embassy or consulate. Unlike the ETIAS —which is valid for 26 countries— European work visas must be obtained from the specific country a citizen wishes to reside in.

The ETIAS does not allow holders to work nor seek employment in the EU. Marshallese ETIAS holders found working or seeking employment in Europe may face the revocation of their ETIAS, as well as fines, or even deportation.

  • Can Argentine passport holders with a criminal record get an ETIAS travel authorization?

Although the requirements to obtain an ETIAS are simpler than those asked of Argentine citizens applying for a European visa, whether you can or cannot get a travel authorization with a criminal record will depend on several factors. For instance, Argentine citizens who have committed minor offences may not be systematically denied entry into the Schengen Area. On the other hand, Argentine nationals requesting an ETIAS with a serious criminal record are likely to be perceived as a threat to the safety and public security of Schengen citizens and visitors alike.

Argentine citizens are advised to always answer all the questions on the ETIAS visa waiver application form honestly. Additionally, applicants are reminded that failure to respond honestly may raise red flags amongst authorities screening your request and therefore comprise the possibility of being granted the travel authorization.
