ETIAS for Barbadian citizens

ETIAS requirements for Barbadian citizens

Until 2020, Barbadian passport holders will still be able to visit Europe without any further documents than producing their valid passport upon arrival at the border. This is true for short trips of up to 90 days for any of the following purposes:

  • Tourism
  • Leisure
  • Business
  • Health
  • Transit

Barbadians can travel to Europe visa-free thanks to the visa waiver agreements between Barbados and the European Union.

  • Traveling from Barbados to the European Union
  • The visa-exempt condition that Barbadians enjoy will entail a new obligatory document required as of 2021. From that date onwards, all travelers from over 60 countries that share visa exemption agreements with Europe will be required to apply for a travel authorization for Europe.

The new mandatory European travel authorization is known as the ETIAS, or European Travel Information and Authorization System. It is being set up by European Union authorities with the objective of improving security within the Schengen Zone as well as fighting terrorism.

The European Union is developing a series of complementary security and intelligence systems that work seamlessly alongside the ETIAS:

All of the above grant authorities a better knowledge of the identity of visa-exempt travelers who travel to the Schengen Area, allowing them to prevent the entry of individuals who pose a risk to the EU. This will ultimately benefit both Barbadian visitors and EU residents in the following ways:

  • Faster and more efficient border checks thanks to the implementation of intelligent borders and integrated security systems
  • Saving Barbadian passengers time and hassle by registering online beforehand without having to visit an embassy or consulate
  • Increasing security in Schengen member nations through coordinated risk assessment by Frontex
  • An important reduction in the number of entry refusals at EU border crossing points

ETIAS Benefits for Barbadian Citizens

Barbadian travelers holding a valid ETIAS travel authorization will be granted a 90-day total stay in any and all Schengen member nations within a 180-day period.

ETIAS Countries from Barbados

ETIAS Required

Barbadian ETIAS holders can enter and circulate freely between the following European countries

  • EU Schengen
  • Non-EU Schengen States
  • Non-Schengen EU States
ETIAS Required

Non-EU Member States:

Micro-States de facto part of Schengen Area:

  • Monaco
  • San Marino
  • Vatican City
ETIAS Non-Required

Non-Schengen EU States

  • United Kingdom
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Romania
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus

Additionally, the ETIAS is a multiple-entry travel authorization that remains valid for 3 years as long as the Barbadian passport used in the application stays current.

This means that Barbadian ETIAS holders can enter Europe for 90 days, then spend 90 days outside the Schengen borders, after which they will be granted another 90 days they may spend within the Schengen member nations.

Should the Barbadian passport used to apply for the ETIAS expire before the 3-year validity period runs out, the travel authorization will be rendered null. The traveler will then have to apply for a new ETIAS using the details of their new Barbadian passport. Fortunately, obtaining a new ETIAS from Barbados is quick and simple.

ETIAS Requirements for Barbadian Passport Holders

Since ETIAS is not a visa, the requirements for Barbadian citizens are much simpler and so is the application procedure. Passport holders from Barbados will need to have the following at hand in order to successfully apply for an ETIAS visa waiver:

  • A current Barbadian passport which remains valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from Europe
  • A valid email address the citizen has access to, where they will receive notifications regarding their ETIAS request as well as an electronic copy of the document once it has been granted
  • A credit or debit card in order to be able to pay for the ETIAS from Barbados processing fees online

Once the Barbadian traveler has these 3 requirements, they will be able to apply for an ETIAS online. Filling out the application form to obtain an ETIAS from Barbados should take no more than 10 minutes.

Obtaining an ETIAS Visa Waiver from Barbados

Applying for an ETIAS from Barbados requires a simple procedure that can be completed from the traveler’s smartphone, tablet or personal computer.

As soon as the ETIAS application form is open to the public in 2021, applicants will be able to complete the simple online form with the following information:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Country of passport issuance, in this case, Barbados
  • Passport issuance date
  • Passport expiration date
  • Passport number
  • Travel itinerary, including intended arrival date and first Schengen country of arrival
  • Travel purpose

Next, travelers from Barbados will need to answer some simple security and health-related questions. It is important to answer these questions honestly. Barbadian ETIAS applicants with a criminal record may still be able to obtain a travel authorization if they are not considered a threat to the security and wellbeing of the European Union and its residents.

Once the applicant has filled out their ETIAS application, it is advisable to carefully revise all the data entered. It is important for the data submitted in the visa waiver application to coincide exactly with the information printed on the traveler’s Barbadian passport.

Any errors, false information or discrepancies may result in a delay in the processing of the traveler’s application, or even in the refusal of their travel authorization.

After going over the data entered, the Barbadian national will be asked to provide their contact and payment details in order to finalize their ETIAS application.

Most ETIAS requests from Barbados will be processed and automatically approved within the first 24 hours. A small number of applications may require manual processing which would increase turnaround time to about 2-3 business days.

Therefore, it is best practice to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization at least 3 business days prior to your desired departure date from Barbados.

ETIAS Travel Authorization for Barbadian Minors

Barbadian passport holders of all ages —including underage citizens— are required to apply for an individual ETIAS visa waiver prior to their departure towards Europe.

Parents and legal guardians traveling from Barbados to Europe with their children can apply on their behalf using the minor’s personal and passport data in the ETIAS application form:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Country of passport issuance, in this case, Barbados
  • Passport issuance date
  • Passport expiration date
  • Passport number

The rest of the data required to fill out the ETIAS application for Barbadian minors —including travel, contact and payment information— can also be completed by parents or guardians.

Once the ETIAS for Barbados has been processed, the minor’s travel authorization will be sent in digital format to the email address submitted in the application.

All travelers must travel with the same Barbadian passport used in the ETIAS application in order for the travel authorization to be valid once they arrive to Europe.

ETIAS for Barbadians - FAQ

  • Do Barbadian nationals with dual citizenship need an ETIAS for Europe?

The Europe travel authorization is a requirement for citizens of over 60 ETIAS eligible countries, including Barbados, who wish to visit Europe from 2021 onwards.

Additionally, the ETIAS for Barbadians will be electronically linked to the exact passport used in the application process.

The ETIAS cannot be transferred from one passport to another, not even when both belong to the same citizen.

This means that Barbadians with more than one valid passport due to dual citizenship must choose which passport they want to apply for the ETIAS with and make sure to travel on the same passport.

Barbadian nationals with a second passport from a Schengen visa required country can still apply for an ETIAS online and avoid the hassle of having to visit an embassy or consulate to obtain a consular visa. The only requirement, in this case, would be to travel to Europe on the Barbadian passport (not the third-country passport) in order to be granted entry with the ETIAS.

  • Do Barbadians need an ETIAS to attend a conference in Europe?

Students and professionals from Barbados who wish to expand their knowledge by attending a summit, workshop or short course in Europe can do so without having to apply for a visa.

Barbadians are granted entry into the European Schengen countries just by presenting their passport throughout 2020.

However, from 2021, onwards, Barbadian nationals who wish to attend a conference, class or congress in a Schengen nation will have to carry a valid ETIAS.

The ETIAS will allow Barbadian holders to attend short academic activities in all Schengen nations for up to 90 days total within a 180-day period.

Hence, Barbadians with a valid ETIAS can attend multiple conferences in different countries in the European Union without having to apply for individual visas.

  • Can Barbadians do business or work in Europe on an ETIAS?

The ETIAS is an invaluable resource for Barbadian businesspeople who wish to come to Europe since it grants them entry into 26 countries with a single travel authorization.

Barbadian passport holders who wish to visit the Schengen Area for business purposes can do so with an ETIAS travel authorization for up to 90 days.

Travelers from Barbados who wish to work in the EU but are yet undecided as to which country they would like to reside in can also benefit from an ETIAS. The travel authorization will allow Barbadians to visit all Schengen nations in order to determine which one best meets their needs and interests.

Once the Barbadian citizen has decided which country they would like to work in, they will have to visit the embassy or consulate for this nation in order to apply for a work visa. European long-term visas, unlike the ETIAS, are country-specific and cannot be obtained online from Barbados. Requirements for European work visas for Barbadian nationals can vary from one EU nation to another.

Barbadian nationals found working in the EU on an ETIAS may face serious consequences such as the revocation of their travel authorization, fines, or even deportation.
